Eleven-year-old Toni trains as a boxer with her older brother at a community center in Cincinnati's West End. When she notices a dance group practicing in the same building, she is drawn to their confidence and physical style, a rigorous form of hip hop known as drill. Toni gradually leaves boxing behind and joins the group, adopting its routines and rituals in an effort to be accepted.
As she settles into the troupe and forms bonds with the other girls, she begins asking herself who she is in this new social world. Her questions grow sharper when members of the group start suffering fainting spells and other violent fits, leaving Toni to weigh how much she is willing to change to belong.
The Fits is Anna Rose Holmer's first feature, followed by God's Creatures in 2022. She directed and produced, and wrote the screenplay with Saela Davis and Lisa Kjerulff. Royalty Hightower plays Toni, with Alexis Neblett, Makyla Burnam, Da'Sean Minor, Inayah Rodgers and Antonio A.B. Grant Jr. among a cast of 24. The film runs 72 minutes. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 8 out of 10 from 110 reviews, while on TMDB it has 6.4 out of 10 from 126 votes, a gap that suggests critics responded to it more strongly than general viewers did.
