Short description

Maria and Michael, an American couple living in India with their young son Oliver and daughter Lucy, are left devastated when Oliver dies in an accident. Unable to accept the loss, Maria learns of an old ritual said to let the living contact the dead, and travels to an abandoned temple whose doorway is believed to connect the two worlds. Warned never to open that door, she does so anyway, and something crosses back with consequences for her family and her daughter most of all.

The 2016 horror film was directed by Johannes Roberts, who wrote the screenplay with Ernest Riera and had previously made Storage 24 and Roadkill, with 47 Meters Down following in 2017. Sarah Wayne Callies plays Maria, Jeremy Sisto plays Michael, and Sofia Rosinsky plays Lucy. Filming drew on its India setting, and the production was backed by Lipsync Productions and Alexandre Aja, among others. Made for about 5 million dollars, it took roughly 14 million worldwide.

Reception from general audiences was mixed: on IMDb it holds a modest rating, and on TMDB it sits at 5.5 from around 911 votes, suggesting a thriller that drew viewers but divided them.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The family's surname in the film is Harwood.
  • In Spain, the film was released in 84 cinemas and was available only in dubbed version.
  • At the 59th minute of the film, during a phone conversation between Michael and Maria, Michael is holding the phone upside down.
  • While packing Oliver's things into a bag, Picky throws in a photograph. In it, the boy's grandmother is played by Mary Lambert, the director of the horror film 'Pet Sematary' (1989), based on the eponymous 1983 novel by Stephen King.
  • In the scenes where the house is shown from the outside, they filmed at the actual house where Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was born. The stuffed tiger in the film is named Khan, and Maria, played by Sarah Wayne Callies, reads 'The Jungle Book' (1893-1894) to her son.
