Swing Girls

Tomoko Suzuki and a group of her classmates are stuck in a summer remedial math class when they take on the job of delivering lunches to the school's brass band. The food turns out to be spoiled, and the musicians fall ill before an important event. Tomoko and the other girls, none of whom can play an instrument, end up taking their places. What begins as a way to get out of class turns into a genuine interest in jazz, and the group keeps playing together as the Swing Girls, working toward a local music competition even after the original band recovers.

Shinobu Yaguchi directed and co-wrote the film with Junko Yaguchi, following his 2002 feature Parco Fiction. It sits between that film and Tokyo Rhapsody (2007) in his filmography. Juri Ueno leads as Tomoko, with Yuta Hiraoka, Shihori Kanjiya, Yuika Motokariya, Yukari Toyoshima and Naoto Takenaka among the 45 credited cast members. Produced by TOHO, Fuji Television Network, dentsu and Altamira Pictures, the Japanese comedy runs 105 minutes and took about 19 million dollars worldwide.

On IMDb it holds 7.6 out of 10 from roughly 6,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.9 out of 10 from 179 votes, indicating a warmly received film with a larger audience on the former platform.
