Winnetou, now chief of the Apaches, wants to secure a lasting peace between the Native American tribes and white settlers. At a council at Fort Niobrara, he and his blood brother Old Shatterhand bring the great chiefs together with the American government. Their work is threatened by Bud Forester, a ruthless oil magnate who stirs up hostilities and has settlers attacked so that blame falls on the Apaches, hoping to seize oil-rich Ponca land. With help from their companion Castlepool, Winnetou and Old Shatterhand set out to expose the scheme before war breaks out.
The film is the second entry in the Winnetou series and the third western Harald Reinl directed, following Treasure of Silver Lake and Apache Gold and preceding The Desperado Trail. Harald G. Petersson wrote the screenplay, and the production was mounted by Constantin Film with Taurus Film, Jadran Film and Société Nouvelle de Cinématographie. Lex Barker returns as Old Shatterhand and Pierre Brice as Winnetou, with Anthony Steel as Forester, Karin Dor as Ribanna, Klaus Kinski as Luke Lucas and Renato Baldini as Colonel Merril.
Released on 17 September 1964 and running 94 minutes, the West German-French-Yugoslavian production took about 34 million dollars worldwide. On TMDB it holds 6.7 out of 10 from 135 votes, a solid audience score for a series western of its era.
