In 1964's Old Shatterhand, the Apache chief Winnetou and his blood brother, the white frontiersman Old Shatterhand, set out to secure peace between their people and the United States government. Their path is blocked by Captain Bradley and his associates, who scheme to seize Apache grazing land for themselves. The conspirators stage killings that are blamed on Winnetou's band, drawing in the Comanche and pushing the army toward open war. As the deception widens and a young survivor brings word of what really happened, the two friends ride against Bradley and his allies in a struggle centered on the fort.
The film is a German western, an adaptation of Karl May's characters, made with Italian, French and Yugoslav partners on a budget of about five million dollars. Hugo Fregonese directed it, following Marco Polo (1962) and Black Tuesday (1954) in his filmography. Lex Barker plays Old Shatterhand and Pierre Brice plays Winnetou, roles they had established in earlier Karl May productions; Daliah Lavi, Guy Madison, Ralf Wolter and Gustavo Rojo head the supporting cast of twenty-six credited players. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 2,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 out of 10 from about 85 votes, indicating a modest but settled reputation among viewers.
