Short description
Sing Street is set in Dublin during the 1980s, where teenager Conor Lalor is moved from a private school to a rougher public one as his parents' marriage falls apart and money runs short. Bullied by other students and pressured by strict teachers, he becomes fixated on Raphina, a mysterious girl from the neighbourhood. To impress her, he claims to have a band and asks her to appear in a music video. The problem is that neither the band nor his musical ability exists yet, so he gathers a group of local boys and they start writing and performing songs together, with his older brother Brendan offering guidance from the sidelines.
John Carney wrote and directed the film, following Once and Begin Again, and it came before Flora and Son and Power Ballad in his filmography. Ferdia Walsh-Peelo plays Conor, with Lucy Boynton as Raphina, Jack Reynor as Brendan, and Ben Carolan, Mark McKenna and Kelly Thornton among the credited cast of 27. Made for about 4 million dollars, it took roughly 14 million worldwide.
On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 8 out of 10 from 218 reviews, while on TMDB it has 7.9 out of 10 from 2,514 votes.

- Sing Street is a kind of tribute to the film The Commitments (1991). There are obvious similarities: both films are built around the formation of a musical band in Dublin around the same time, and Maria Doyle Kennedy starred in both. A less obvious reference is Eamon’s love for rabbits, while the main character of The Commitments was named Jimmy Rabbitte (from English 'rabbit').
