Short description

Tarzan is an orphaned infant who is taken in by a gorilla named Kala and raised among her troop in the African jungle, despite the objections of Kerchak, the group's leader. Growing up alongside the playful gorilla Terk and the nervous elephant Tantor, he learns to move through the trees with the speed and instincts of the animals around him and comes to think of himself as one of them. His first meeting with other humans, among them the explorer Jane Porter, forces him to confront the fact that he is human and to weigh which world he belongs to.

The film is an animated adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs's story, directed by Kevin Lima and Chris Buck and written by Tab Murphy, Bob Tzudiker and Noni White, with Bonnie Arnold producing. It was Lima's second feature as director, following A Goofy Movie, and Buck's first. Tony Goldwyn voices the adult Tarzan, with Alex D. Linz as the young Tarzan, Minnie Driver as Jane, Glenn Close as Kala, Rosie O'Donnell as Terk and Brian Blessed as Clayton, in a production credited with 86 cast members and 62 crew members. Made for a budget of 130 million USD, it took 448 million USD worldwide.

On IMDb the film holds 7.3/10 from 267,000 votes and on TMDB 7.4/10 from 7,503 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 8.1/10 from 157 reviews, higher than the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • When working on Tarzan's movement in the fog, the animators based it on the movements of professional skateboarder Tony Hawk on a board.
  • A specially created computer program called Deep Canvas was used in the making of the cartoon, allowing two-dimensional characters to be inserted into a three-dimensional space.
  • Woody Allen was initially approved to voice Tantor the elephant, but DreamWorks Animation SKG CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg convinced him to voice Zed in the animated film "Antz" (1998), which was in production at the time.
