Short description

Two American friends, Lindsay and Jenny, are driving across Europe on holiday when their car breaks down at night on a wooded road in Germany. Unable to get a phone signal, they walk through the forest and come upon an isolated house, where a polite older man offers them shelter. He is a retired German surgeon named Dr. Heiter, once known internationally for separating conjoined twins. After he drugs them, they wake in a makeshift operating room in his cellar and find they are not alone; a Japanese man is held there too. The doctor intends to reverse the work he was famous for, joining his captives into a single creature of his own design.

Tom Six wrote, directed and produced the film, which followed his 2004 debut Gay in Amsterdam and began a trilogy he continued with two further instalments. Dieter Laser plays Heiter, with Ashley C. Williams and Ashlynn Yennie as the travellers and Akihiro Kitamura as the third captive. Shot for about two million dollars, it is a low-budget horror film whose premise is announced in its title.

It was released in 2009. On IMDb it holds 4.4 out of 10 from roughly 96,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.2 out of 10 from about 2,500. A critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 across 97 reviews places it only slightly above the audience scores. Small vote counts and low ratings on both sides suggest a film seen mainly by horror audiences drawn to its subject matter.

What's left behind the scenes

  • According to director Tom Six, the film was inspired by medical experiments conducted by the Nazis during World War II, such as the crimes of Josef Mengele at the Auschwitz concentration camp.
  • During a meeting with potential investors, Six decided to omit the details of how the centipede's members would be connected, fearing a lack of understanding. Those who funded the film's creation did not see the full picture until it was completed.
