Toni Erdmann

Winfried, a retired music teacher in his mid-sixties who lives with his old dog, enjoys practical jokes and elaborate disguises. His daughter Ines is his opposite: an ambitious corporate consultant who moves from one international project to the next, and the two rarely see each other. After his dog dies, Winfried decides to visit Ines unannounced at her work in Bucharest. His jokes and his pointed remarks about the way she lives soon bring the two into conflict. Winfried then invents an alter ego, Toni Erdmann, a shabby, eccentric figure with a crooked set of false teeth, a badly fitting suit and a wig, who claims to be a personal coach and turns up among Ines's colleagues.

Maren Ade directed and wrote the screenplay, following her earlier feature Everyone Else from 2009. Sandra Hüller plays Ines and Peter Simonischek plays Winfried and Toni; Michael Wittenborn, Thomas Loibl, Trystan Pütter and Ingrid Bisu appear in supporting roles. The production was a European co-operation between Germany, Austria, Belgium, Romania and France, with a budget of about 3 million USD, and it took roughly 12 million USD worldwide.

On IMDb it holds 7.3/10 from more than 55,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9/10 from over 1,100 votes. A critics' rating of 8.3/10 from 239 reviews places it clearly above both audience scores.
