Submergence follows two people whose brief romance is interrupted by their dangerous work. James More, a British intelligence officer, is captured by jihadist fighters in Somalia, where he is held in a windowless room and suspected of being a spy. Thousands of miles away, in the Greenland Sea, the biomathematician Danielle Flinders prepares to descend in a submersible to test her theory about the origins of life. As she carries out the dive, neither of them knows whether the other is still alive. The story moves between their present confinement and memories of the previous Christmas, when they met by chance at an isolated hotel on the French coast and fell in love while preparing for their respective missions.
Wim Wenders directed the film, the eighteenth of the twenty-two features he has made in chronological order, arriving between Every Thing Will Be Fine and Perfect Days. Erin Dignam wrote the screenplay. James McAvoy and Alicia Vikander lead the cast as James and Danielle, with Celyn Jones, Alexander Siddig, Alex Hafner and Harvey Friedman among the supporting players.
The production was mounted on a budget of about 15 million dollars and involved companies from Germany, Spain, the United States and France. On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 5.4 from roughly 9,900 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 5.5 from around 318 votes. A critics' rating of 4.3 from 54 reviews places it below both audience scores.
