The New Daughter
Short description
John James, a writer, moves with his two children to an isolated property after a difficult divorce. His daughter Louisa, on the edge of adolescence, discovers a burial mound on the land and becomes fascinated by it. Her behaviour turns strange and withdrawn, unsettling her younger brother Sam, and John comes to suspect that the mound in the nearby field is the cause.
The New Daughter is a 2009 American horror and thriller directed by Luiso Berdejo, who wrote the screenplay with John Travis; it was Berdejo's first feature as director, followed much later by Control Room. Kevin Costner plays John, with Ivana Baquero as Louisa, Gattlin Griffith as Sam, Samantha Mathis as Cassandra and Noah Taylor as Professor Evan White. Paul Brooks produced for Gold Circle Films.
Receiving a limited release in December 2009, the film drew modest audience scores, with a 5.3 rating on IMDb from around 17,000 votes and a 5.4 on TMDB from far fewer, while a small sample of ten critics' reviews averaged 5.3.
What's left behind the scenes
- A film adaptation of a story from the horror anthology Nocturnes (2004) by Irish writer John Connolly.
- During filming, cinematographer Checco Varese fell and broke his right arm. After suffering for a while with a cast and painkillers, he flew from the set to Los Angeles for surgery, and his duties were performed by Antonio Calvache for five days.
- A nanny, Mrs. Emsworth, is hired to look after the Kostner children. That was the name of the heroine of a vampire story written by British writer Edward Frederick Benson (1867-1940).
