Short description
Nadine Franklin is a high school student who already feels out of place, and her situation worsens when her best friend Krista starts dating Nadine's older brother Darian, whom Nadine cannot stand. The betrayal leaves her more isolated than before, until an unexpected friendship with a thoughtful classmate named Erwin gives her a reason to see her life differently.
Kelly Fremon Craig wrote and directed the film, her first feature as director; she later directed Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. James L. Brooks, Richard Sakai and Julie Ansell produced. Hailee Steinfeld plays Nadine, with Woody Harrelson as Mr. Bruner, Haley Lu Richardson as Krista, Blake Jenner as Darian, Kyra Sedgwick as Mona and Hayden Szeto as Erwin. The production had a budget of 9 million dollars and took in 19 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.3 from roughly 151,000 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 7.1 from about 4,330 votes. A critics' rating of 8 out of 10, drawn from 222 reviews, places it above both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The original script was titled "Best Friends". It focused more on the comedic aspect of events and on the friendship between Nadine and Krista, rather than friendship being a defining characteristic of Nadine's life. This script did not include Mr. Bruner, played by Woody Harrelson; Nadine was named Nadine Hamidi Yusefa Rostami (her full name); her mother's boyfriend was portrayed differently (and had lines); there was no mention of her father's death; Nick was Dan, a football player (and he also had lines); and Erwin was a futurist, not a future director. The film ended with a graduation scene.
