Splice

Elsa and Clive are research scientists who push genetic engineering further than their field allows, producing animal hybrids in the laboratory. When the funding that supports their work is withdrawn, they continue in secret and combine human and animal DNA, creating an organism they name Dren. The creature grows at an extraordinary rate, and the pair's scientific interest in her gradually becomes something closer to a parental attachment, even as keeping her hidden grows harder. Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley play the two leads, with Delphine Chanéac as the adult Dren and Abigail Chu as the young one. Vincenzo Natali directed and wrote the screenplay with Doug Taylor and Antoinette Terry Bryant; Guillermo del Toro is among the producers. It was released in June 2010 and runs 104 minutes.

Splice is the fifth feature Natali directed, following Elevated, Cube, Cypher and his segment of Paris Je T'aime. Made for around 26 million dollars with production backing from companies in the United States, Canada, Germany and France, it drew a modest theatrical audience and later circulated widely on home viewing. On IMDb, roughly 106,000 voters give it 5.8 out of 10, while about 2,500 users on TMDB rate it 5.9. A critics' score of 6.8 from some 200 reviews places it noticeably above those audience figures, so the film found more favour with reviewers than with the general viewing public.
