Being 17 is a French drama set in the Pyrenees, where teenager Damien lives with his mother, a doctor, while his father, a military pilot, is serving abroad. At school, Damien is tormented by Thomas, a classmate from a farming family in the mountains. When Thomas's mother falls ill and is hospitalized, Damien's mother takes Thomas into their home so he can stay close to her. The two boys, who have been hostile toward each other, are forced into daily proximity, and the tension between them gradually shifts.
André Téchiné directed the film, working from a screenplay he wrote with Céline Sciamma. It sits between Strayed and My New Friends in his filmography, following earlier works such as Wild Reeds. Sandrine Kiberlain plays Dr. Marianne Delille, with Kacey Mottet Klein as Damien and Corentin Fila as Thomas. The supporting cast includes Alexis Loret, Jean Fornerod and Mama Prassinos.
The film was released in 2016 and runs 116 minutes. It earned roughly 2 million dollars worldwide, a modest figure consistent with a French art-house release. Audiences on TMDB rate it 6.8 out of 10 from 389 votes, while critics give it 7.2 out of 10 from 42 reviews, so professional reviewers responded somewhat more favorably than the wider public.
