Aquarius

Aquarius follows Clara, a widowed former music critic in her sixties who has spent decades in the Aquarius, a distinctive 1940s apartment building on the seafront Avenida Boa Viagem in Recife, Brazil. A property developer has bought up every other unit in the block, and Clara, the last owner holding out, refuses to sell despite the generous offers. The company's approach turns from flattery to pressure and underhanded tactics, and the standoff unsettles the daily life she has built around books, records and memories of the people she loves.

Kleber Mendonça Filho wrote and directed the film, his second feature, released in 2016 before Bacurau, Pictures of Ghosts, The Secret Agent and South of Tehran. Sônia Braga plays Clara, with Maeve Jinkings, Irandhir Santos, Humberto Carrão, Zoraide Coleto and Carla Ribas among a credited cast of 34. The Brazilian and French production runs 147 minutes.

On IMDb the drama holds 7.4 out of 10 from around 22,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 7.4 from just over 500 votes. A film critics' rating of 8.1 from 114 reviews places it above those audience scores.
