Honkytonk Man

Set during the Great Depression, the film follows a farm boy in Oklahoma who leaves his family's land to travel with a country musician, his uncle Red Stovall. Red is an alcoholic singer scraping by in bars and chasing a long-shot audition in Nashville. Whit, his nephew, sees a chance to escape the hard life of cotton fields, and the two set out on the road together. Along the way they are joined by the boy's grandfather and, later, a young woman with ambitions of her own. The journey becomes a test of whether Red's last opportunity will amount to anything.

Clint Eastwood directed and produced the film from a screenplay by Clancy Carlile. It is the ninth of the forty features he has directed, arriving between Firefox and Sudden Impact. Eastwood plays Red, and his son Kyle makes his film debut as Whit. John McIntire, Alexa Kenin, Verna Bloom and Matt Clark also appear. It is based on Carlile's novel of the same name.

Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures with Malpaso Productions on a budget of about 2 million dollars, the film took roughly 4 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from around 10,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from 208 votes. A critics' rating of 7.3 out of 10 from 14 reviews places it above the audience scores.
