Short description

A young pilot, Alexey Gushchin, is removed from military aviation after refusing an order he considers senseless. He finds work as a co-pilot at a civil airline, where his blunt manner does not sit well with his new colleagues, among them the stern captain Leonid Zinchenko and the second pilot Alexandra. During a flight to Asia, the crew picks up a distress signal from a volcanic island and decides to attempt a rescue. What follows tests whether the crew can act as one.

The film is a Russian action picture directed by Nikolay Lebedev, who wrote the screenplay with Tikhon Kornev and Nikolai Kulikov. It is the second of the three features he has directed, following Wolfhound of the Grey Dog Clan in 2006 and preceding Kraken in 2025. Danila Kozlovsky plays Gushchin, with Vladimir Mashkov as Zinchenko and Agnė Grudytė as Alexandra; Sergey Shakurov, Sergey Romanovich and Elena Yakovleva also appear among a credited cast of 38. Nikita Mikhalkov, Leonid Vereshchagin and Anton Zlatopolskiy produced, and Mosfilm and the Cinema Fund were among the production companies.

Released in April 2016, the film runs 138 minutes. Its worldwide box office, around 27 million, sits well below the reported production budget of 650 million, so it did not recoup its costs in cinemas. Audiences rate it at 6.6 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 6,500 votes, and at 6.9 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller base of 306 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The second Russian film after 'Stalingrad' (Fyodor Bondarchuk, 2013) filmed in 'IMAX' format.
  • During Gushchin's flight simulator exam, Alexander Mitta appears as a technician for a few seconds, but he is not listed in the final credits.
  • The film contains a reference to the 1979 film 'Crew'. In a scene of a meeting of the airline's management, one of the employees addresses Alexandra Yakovleva's character: 'It's easy for you to say, Tamara Igorevna. You probably haven't found yourself in such a situation?' To which she replies: 'Are you sure?' Alexandra Yakovleva played the flight attendant Tamara in the Soviet 'Crew'.
  • A BMW X5 in the E70 body style is dropped from the plane, and then a BMW X5 in the E53 body style falls into the water near some fishermen.
  • On the 32nd minute, as the crew begins its landing approach, the trainee co-pilot Gushchin spots an oncoming Boeing in the fog and immediately initiates a go-around. At this time, the TCAS system does not issue any alerts. The TCAS system warns of dangerous proximity to other aircraft in the air. It is installed on all aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight of over 5700 kg.
