Perfect Strangers
Short description
Perfect Strangers is an Italian ensemble comedy drama about a long-standing group of friends who meet for dinner and agree to a risky game. Everyone places their phone on the table and, for the rest of the evening, reads incoming messages aloud and takes calls on speaker. What begins as a joke about having nothing to hide gradually exposes secrets, misunderstandings and tensions among the couples and the single friend in the group, with consequences none of them anticipated.
Paolo Genovese directed the film, his sixth feature, arriving between Tutta colpa di Freud (2014) and The Place (2017). He wrote the screenplay with Rolando Ravello and Paolo Costella, and Marco Belardi produced. The cast includes Giuseppe Battiston, Anna Foglietta, Marco Giallini, Edoardo Leo, Valerio Mastandrea and Alba Rohrwacher. It was released in Italy in February 2016 and runs 97 minutes.
The film proved popular internationally, earning about 32 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.7 out of 10 from roughly 77,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.9 out of 10 from more than 4,600 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 out of 10 from 14 reviews sits below those audience scores, suggesting viewers responded to it more warmly than reviewers did.
What's left behind the scenes
- 18 remakes of the film were made in different countries – including Spain, Mexico, South Korea, France, Hungary, Greece, China, and Russia. This is precisely why the film made it into the Guinness Book of World Records.
- The film's original title coincides with the name of the 1984 album “Perfect Strangers” by the rock band Deep Purple. One scene in the film depicts a lunar eclipse, and a character named Rocco says, “And here’s the dark side of the moon.” “The Dark Side of the Moon” is the title of a 1973 album by Pink Floyd.
- A Polish remake of the film was also made. Kasia Smutniak (an Italian model and actress of Polish origin) starred in both films.
