Goodbye Berlin

Maik Klingenberg is fourteen and facing a dull summer alone in his family's Berlin villa. His mother is in rehab and his father has gone away with his assistant. Then Tschick arrives: a new classmate, a Russian immigrant who lives in a tower block in Marzahn and has turned up in a stolen car. The two boys, neither of them part of their school's social life, take off together across the east German countryside with no map, no plan and no particular destination. What begins as a joyride becomes a journey that changes both of them.

Fatih Akin directed this 2016 adaptation, working from a screenplay he wrote with Hark Bohm and Lars Hubrich. It arrived in his filmography between Soul Kitchen (2009) and In the Fade (2017). Tristan Göbel plays Maik and Anand Batbileg plays Tschick, with Mercedes Müller, Anja Schneider, Uwe Bohm and Udo Samel among the credited cast of 34. The film runs 93 minutes and is a German-French production.

Released in September 2016, Goodbye Berlin took about 4 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.9/10 from around 12,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.7/10 from roughly 359 votes, indicating a modest but steady response from viewers.
