A young sailor named Johnny Drake spends his shore leave in a seaside community, where he becomes involved with a dark-haired woman, Mora, who performs as a mermaid at a local pier attraction. As the two grow closer, Johnny learns of strange circumstances surrounding her past and begins to suspect that she may be something more than a carnival performer. The people around her, including her guardian Captain Murdock, add to his unease, and he comes to believe she could be a real mermaid connected to men who have died in the water.
Night Tide was released in 1961 and runs 84 minutes. It was directed and written by Curtis Harrington and produced by Aram Katarian, with American International Pictures, The Filmgroup and Phoenix Films among the production companies. The film was Harrington's first feature, preceding Killer Bees in his directing career. Dennis Hopper plays Johnny, with Linda Lawson as Mora. Gavin Muir, Luana Anders, Marjorie Eaton and Tom Dillon appear in supporting roles.
Audience response has been steady rather than enthusiastic: on IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.4 from around 4,700 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.4, from a much smaller base of about 108 votes. A critics' rating of 7.4 from a handful of reviews places it above those audience scores.
