Dogtooth

Dogtooth is a Greek drama about a married couple who keep their three grown children confined to a walled estate on the edge of a city. The siblings have never left the grounds and have no contact with the outside world, and their parents have taught them a private vocabulary in which ordinary words mean something else entirely. The only outsider permitted inside is Christina, a security guard at the father's workplace who is brought in to satisfy the son's sexual needs. Her presence unsettles the household and leads the older daughter to question what lies beyond the boundary the family calls the law.

Yorgos Lanthimos directed and co-wrote the film with Efthymis Filippou, and produced it with Yorgos Tsourgiannis. It followed his earlier features The Rape of Chloe and Kinetta, and it came before Alps, The Lobster and the later films in his filmography. Christos Stergioglou and Michele Valley play the parents, with Hristos Passalis, Angeliki Papoulia and Mary Tsoni as the three children and Anna Kalaitzidou as Christina.

Released in 2009, the film runs 98 minutes. It holds a rating of 7.1 out of 10 on IMDb from about 122,000 votes and 7 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 2,700 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 7.8 out of 10 from 77 reviews. Lanthimos went on to make eleven more features, ending with Bugonia (2025) in the timeline.
