All We Had

Rita Carmichael works several jobs yet still lives close to the poverty line, raising her thirteen-year-old daughter Ruthie on her own. When the two are evicted from their home, Rita relies on her looks to find a man who will take them in, but Ruthie soon pushes her mother to leave. Mother and daughter head east hoping for a fresh start, and after their money runs out and their car breaks down, they land in a small American town where their luck appears to turn. Their situation improves when Rita takes out a loan to buy a house for the two of them, though the arrangement leaves them exposed to a costly risk.

The drama is Katie Holmes's first film as director, followed by Alone Together in 2022 and Happy Hours in 2026, and she also produces and stars as Rita. Stefania LaVie Owen plays Ruthie, with Eve Lindley, Richard Kind, Luke Wilson and Mark Consuelos in supporting roles. Josh Boone and Jill Killington wrote the screenplay. Twenty actors and forty-three crew members are credited.

The film drew a critics' rating of 5.2 out of 10 from 25 reviews, somewhat below its audience scores: 6 out of 10 on IMDb from around 3,400 votes and 5.5 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 95 votes.
