Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space concludes the film trilogy compiled from the original television series. With the One Year War entering its closing phase, Amuro Ray and the crew of the White Base, redesignated the 13th Autonomous Corps, leave Earth behind and return to space as part of the Earth Federation's push against the Principality of Zeon. Their path takes them toward the neutral colony of Side 6, and Amuro finds himself facing Char Aznable once more, including Char's companion Lalah, whose mental link with Amuro sets up a personal confrontation alongside the larger military campaign.
Yoshiyuki Tomino directed, working from a screenplay he wrote with Yoshihisa Araki and Hiroyuki Hoshiyama, with Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and Osamu Sekita also credited as directors. It was the third Gundam compilation film, following the two released in 1981, and in Tomino's filmography it precedes Char's Counterattack and Gundam F91. The voice cast returns Toru Furuya as Amuro, Shuichi Ikeda as Char, Yo Inoue, Keiko Han, Hirotaka Suzuoki and Fuyumi Shiraishi.
Released in Japan in March 1982, the film took about 15 million dollars worldwide. It holds a rating of 7.5 on IMDb from roughly 1,900 votes, and a matching 7.5 on TMDB, though from only 69 votes there.
