Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer

Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer follows Ataru Morohoshi, Lum and their classmates at Tomobiki High School as they prepare a festival play. The day before the event refuses to end: the same hours keep returning, and anyone who tries to leave town finds themselves back where they started. The characters begin to suspect that their familiar world is looping and that something or someone may be behind it. Mamoru Oshii directed and wrote the screenplay, the second of the thirteen films he directed in chronological order, coming between Dallos and Angel's Egg. The voice cast includes Toshio Furukawa as Ataru, Fumi Hirano as Lum, Akira Kamiya as Mendou, Kazuko Sugiyama as Ten, Saeko Shimazu as Shinobu and Akira Murayama as Perm, among twenty-three credited performers. The film runs 95 minutes and blends animation, comedy, romance and science fiction, produced in Japan by TOHO, Pierrot and Kitty Films. On IMDb it holds a 7.4 rating from around 2,500 votes, and on TMDB a 7.3 from roughly 100 votes, so the two audiences agree closely. Released in 1984, it remains the second feature in a long-running series about Ataru and the alien princess Lum.
