Divines

Divines is set in a Parisian housing estate where drug trafficking and religion exist side by side and prospects for a teenage girl named Dounia look thin. Her mother drinks and drifts through relationships, and school offers her nothing. Eager for money and power, Dounia and her best friend Maimouna set out to follow Rebecca, a respected figure in the local trade who has shown that a woman can reach the top of that world. The girls earn well from their scheme, until Dounia meets Djigui, a young dancer whose presence pulls her toward a different kind of life and strains her relationship with Rebecca.

The film is the feature debut of French director Houda Benyamina, who wrote the screenplay with Romain Compingt and Malik Rumeau, and it was produced by Marc-Benoît Créancier. Oulaya Amamra plays Dounia and Déborah Lukumuena plays Maimouna, with Kévin Mischel as Djigui, Jisca Kalvanda as Rebecca, Yasin Houicha as Samir and Majdouline Idrissi as Dounia's mother, Myriam. Made for roughly three million dollars, it later preceded Benyamina's Salam in 2022 and All for One in 2025.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.3 from about eleven thousand votes, and on TMDB it stands at 7.7 from a smaller base of some seven hundred votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 from nineteen reviews places it close to both audience scores, indicating broad agreement rather than a sharp divide.
