Eddie Vuibert is broke and drifting when a fight in the street brings him to the attention of Victor Benzakhem, a wealthy textile entrepreneur in Paris's Sentier garment district. Victor mistakes Eddie for a fellow Jew and takes him on as a porter. Rather than set the record straight, Eddie lets the misunderstanding stand, and the warm community around him accepts him as one of its own. His position grows more complicated when he falls for Sandra, his employer's daughter, and the truth about his background eventually comes out, provoking a scandal.
Thomas Gilou directed this 1997 French comedy from a screenplay by Michel Munz and Gérard Bitton. It was the first feature Gilou made in the chronological list of his directing credits, ahead of Would I Lie to You? 2, Michou d'Auber and Retirement Home. Richard Anconina plays Eddie, with Vincent Elbaz, Richard Bohringer, José Garcia, Amira Casar and Aure Atika in supporting roles. It was made for about 4 million dollars and took roughly 29 million worldwide, a strong return on a modest budget for a French comedy of its period. Audience response has been moderate rather than enthusiastic: on IMDb it holds 6.4 from around 5,300 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 from roughly 560.
