Cowboy

Frank Harris works at a Chicago hotel, but he dreams of life as a cowboy. When the wealthy cattleman Tom Reece loses money at cards and borrows from him, Frank sees his opening: he offers the rancher a loan in exchange for a share in the herd and a place on the drive. The arrangement takes them toward Mexico, where Reece intends to buy cattle from a rancher whose daughter, Maria, Frank has fallen for. What Frank imagined as romance turns out to be hard, dirty work, and the trail changes him in ways he did not expect.

Delmer Daves directed the film, one of several westerns he made in the 1950s. It followed 3:10 to Yuma in his filmography and was released in the same year as The Badlanders. Glenn Ford plays Reece and Jack Lemmon plays Frank, with Anna Kashfi, Brian Donlevy, Dick York and Víctor Manuel Mendoza among the credited cast of twenty-five. Edmund H. North and Dalton Trumbo wrote the screenplay for producer Julian Blaustein.

Cowboy runs 92 minutes and was released in January 1958. It took in about 2 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds a 6.7 rating from roughly 3,800 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 from a much smaller group of 74 votes.
