Mega Piranha is a 2010 action and horror film about a genetic experiment that produces a school of oversized, aggressive piranhas. After the fish escape from a facility in Venezuela and make their way down the Orinoco River, growing larger and more dangerous as they go, they set a course for Florida just as the tourist season is beginning. Special Agent Jason Fitch is sent to Venezuela, where he joins forces with genetic researcher Sarah Monroe, Colonel Antonio Diaz and biologist Eli Gordon to try to stop the creatures before they reach crowded waters.
The film was directed by Eric Forsberg, who had previously directed Sex Pot in 2009, and co-written by Forsberg and Stuart Gillard. Gillard's directing credits place this as the eleventh of thirteen films he directed, following Hatching Pete in 2009 and preceding Avalon High in 2011. Paul Logan plays Jason Fitch, Tiffany plays Sarah Monroe, and Barry Williams, David Labiosa and Jude Gerard Prest appear among the cast, which numbers 65 credited performers. The production, from The Asylum, had a budget of three million dollars.
Audiences have not received the film warmly. On IMDb it holds a rating of 2.4 out of 10 from around 6,100 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 3.2 out of 10 from 168 votes. These low scores, drawn from a substantial number of viewers on IMDb, indicate a generally poor reception for the creature feature.
