Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor is a British science fiction adventure marking the fiftieth anniversary of the long-running series. Three intertwined strands drive the story: something menacing stirs in present-day London at the National Gallery, a plot against Queen Elizabeth I unfolds in 1562, and far off in space a long-running war approaches its end. What links these threads is the Doctor, who appears here in several incarnations, among them a forgotten version of himself whose actions in the Time War have been buried. With Clara at his side, he must confront a decision from his own past that threatens all of reality.
Nick Hurran directed, working from a screenplay by Steven Moffat, with Marcus Wilson producing. It followed Hurran's earlier features Undertaking Betty, Little Black Book and It's a Boy Girl Thing, and is the fourth film he directed. Matt Smith and David Tennant play the eleventh and tenth Doctors, John Hurt plays the War Doctor, Jenna Coleman plays Clara Oswald, and Billie Piper appears as the Moment. Archive footage brings in William Hartnell as the first Doctor, and the credited cast runs to twenty-eight performers.
Released on 23 November 2013 and running seventy-seven minutes, the special took about 10 million dollars worldwide. Audiences responded strongly and consistently: on IMDb it holds 8.1 from roughly 54,000 votes, and on TMDB 8.2 from around 790 votes. A film critics' rating of 9.4 from nine reviews places it above those audience scores.
