Kate is a woman living in Canada who has long dreamed of marrying her fiancé, Charlie, and settling into a quiet life. When Charlie travels to Paris on business and then calls to say he has fallen for a French woman named Juliette, Kate decides to win him back. Her plan runs into an obstacle she has avoided all her life: a deep fear of flying. She boards a plane to Paris anyway, and on the flight she meets Luc Teyssier, a talkative French stranger. At customs, Luc slips a stolen necklace into her bag without her knowledge, and soon Kate finds herself pursued across France by a thief, a police inspector named Jean-Paul and her own determination to reach Charlie. The trip turns into a chase in which her original goal becomes steadily less certain.
Lawrence Kasdan directed the film, his eighth feature, arriving between Wyatt Earp and Mumford, from a screenplay by Adam Brooks. Meg Ryan, who also produced, stars as Kate, with Kevin Kline as Luc, Timothy Hutton as Charlie, Jean Reno as Inspector Jean-Paul Cardon, François Cluzet as Bob and Suzan Anbeh as Juliette.
Released in May 1995, the film took about 102 million dollars worldwide, a strong return for a romantic comedy of its period. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from roughly 56,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 from over 800 votes, indicating a generally favourable audience impression. A critics' score of 5.6 from 27 reviews sits below those audience figures.
