The Untold Story
Short description
In 1986 Macau, a case containing dismembered human remains washes ashore, and the police trace it back to a small restaurant selling pork buns. Suspicion falls on Wong Chi Hang, the odd and unkempt man who runs the place, whose behaviour and contradictions deepen the case against him.
The film is based on events that shook Macau in the mid-1980s. Herman Yau directed it from a screenplay by Law Kam-Fai, with Danny Lee Sau-Yin producing and playing Officer Lee, the investigator on the trail. Anthony Wong plays Wong Chi Hang, heading a cast that also includes Emily Kwan Bo-Wai, Lau Siu-Ming, Shing Fui-On and Eric Kei Ka-Fat. It mixes crime and horror with comedy, runs 95 minutes, and was released in May 1993. It is the first of 16 films Yau has directed in chronological order, ahead of Ebola Syndrome in 1996.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.8 from around 5,200 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.3 from roughly 150 votes, a smaller and lower-scoring sample than the IMDb one.
What's left behind the scenes
- Before filming the mass murder scene in the restaurant, Anthony Wong locked himself in a room and wondered why he was making such a film, and whether he should continue.
- Anthony Wong received the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor for his role in the film, but according to him, it was unclear why he received the award, as he hadn't done anything particularly outstanding.
- The film is based on real events: on August 4, 1985, in Macau, Huang Zhiheng killed a family of 10 people at the Eight Immortals Restaurant due to a refusal to pay gambling debts.
