Short description
Five former U.S. special forces operatives, now out of the military and short on money, come together for a job of their own making. Santiago "Pope" Garcia has spent years tracking a drug lord and has finally located his hideout in the remote border region where Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil meet, a lawless area known as a haven for organized crime. He persuades four old comrades, among them Tom "Redfly" Davis, to raid the man's fortune, and the team crosses into the jungle to take money that no government has sanctioned them to take. The plan is meant to secure their families. When circumstances shift and the operation begins to slip beyond their control, the men face consequences none of them anticipated, and their loyalty to one another is tested.
J.C. Chandor directed, working from a screenplay he wrote with Mark Boal. The film is the fourth of the five features Chandor has directed, following Margin Call, All Is Lost and A Most Violent Year, and preceding Kraven the Hunter. Ben Affleck and Oscar Isaac head the cast, with Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, Pedro Pascal and Adria Arjona among the 48 credited performers.
The production carried a budget of 115 million USD. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from roughly 161,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.3 out of 10 from about 3,650 votes. A critics' rating of 6.4 out of 10 from 140 reviews places professional assessment close to the audience response.
What's left behind the scenes
- The coordinates indicated in the note at the end (19 degrees 22 minutes 32.0 seconds south latitude, 69 degrees 15 minutes 38.2 seconds west longitude) correspond to a point in the Chilean Andes approximately 19.2 kilometers southeast of the city of Camina.
- In April 2017, Paramount decided to shelve the project. This happened when Tom Hardy and Channing Tatum left due to disagreements with the rewritten script. A month later, Netflix decided to take on the film. Ben Affleck, who joined the project in a role originally intended for Hardy, reported that there was another reason to offer the film to Netflix: the previous shooting plans didn't accommodate the Spanish language at all, even though the script required the characters to speak exclusively in Spanish for the first 20 minutes. Fortunately, Netflix had no such issues.
- Some members of the film crew were trained by real fighters from the US Navy SEAL special forces. This was done to add realism to the film.
- Work on the film began in 2010.
