Based on a real Hong Kong criminal case, Dr. Lamb follows a taxi driver named Lam Gor Yu who commits a series of murders on rainy nights. A devout but disturbed man, he picks up sex workers, kills them, and photographs their dismembered bodies as keepsakes. The case comes to light when images of a dead woman are developed at a photo shop, leading the police to take Lam into custody. Inspector Lee handles the investigation and the interrogations, which grow increasingly brutal as the officers try to break the suspect. The film deals with the killings, the photographs, and the violence of the police questioning rather than building a conventional mystery.
The film is a Hong Kong production directed by Danny Lee Sau-Yin and Billy Tang, from a screenplay by Law Kam-Fai, with Lee also producing. It was Lee's second film as director, following Legend of the Dragon the previous year, while for Tang it came between Dragon Fight and Brother of Darkness in a run of crime films. Lee plays Inspector Lee opposite Simon Yam as Lam, with Kent Cheng, Lau Siu-Ming, Parkman Wong and Emily Kwan in supporting roles.
Released in October 1992 and running 89 minutes, the film rates 5.9 out of 10 on IMDb from around 1,100 votes, while on TMDB it holds 5.3 from a much smaller pool of about three dozen ratings. The wider sampling on IMDb places it as a modestly regarded example of the era's Hong Kong crime cinema.
