Laura lives in Buenos Aires with her Argentinian husband and their children, but she grew up in a village near Madrid. She returns there with her family for her sister's wedding, a visit meant to be brief and celebratory. Among the people she meets again is Paco, a friend from her youth who stayed in the area and built a respected life as a winegrower.
The festivities are interrupted by events nobody anticipated, and what begins as a family reunion turns into a crisis that reaches far beyond Laura's relatives. Long-buried secrets surface, old relationships are re-examined, and the community's apparent harmony gives way to suspicion as those involved try to work out what happened and who knew what.
Asghar Farhadi wrote and directed the film, which came after The Salesman in his filmography and was his first made in Spain and in Spanish. Penélope Cruz plays Laura, Javier Bardem plays Paco, and Ricardo Darín appears as Alejandro, with Eduard Fernández, Bárbara Lennie and Inma Cuesta in supporting roles. Made for a reported 11 million dollars, it took about 18 million worldwide. On TMDB it holds 6.6 out of 10 from 1,056 votes, while a critics' rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 180 reviews places it somewhat above the audience figure.
