Fahrenheit 451
Short description
Fahrenheit 451 is set in a future society where books are outlawed and firemen are tasked with burning any that are found. Guy Montag is one such fireman, carrying out his orders under Captain Beatty without questioning them. His certainty begins to crack after he meets Clarisse McClellan, a young woman connected to a resistance movement working to preserve literature. Montag starts to doubt the regime he serves and is drawn toward the rebels' cause, putting him at odds with the system he has spent his career enforcing. The film is based on Ray Bradbury's novel.
Ramin Bahrani directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Amir Naderi. The film followed Bahrani's 2015 drama 99 Homes and preceded The White Tiger, which he made in 2021. Michael B. Jordan plays Montag, with Michael Shannon as Captain Beatty and Sofia Boutella as Clarisse McClellan; Khandi Alexander, Lilly Singh and Martin Donovan also appear.
Released in 2018 by HBO Films, the film runs 100 minutes. Audiences were divided: on IMDb it holds 5 out of 10 from around 26,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.5 out of 10 from roughly 964 votes. A critics' rating of 4.9 out of 10 from 84 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores on both platforms.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Mel Gibson was going to direct the film. He also hoped to cast Tom Cruise in the lead role, however, neither Gibson nor Cruise were able to take on the project due to commitments to other films.
- Ray Bradbury (1920-2012), whose film was based on his novel of the same name (1953), once asked an acquaintance who was a firefighter at what temperature paper catches fire, and heard in response: "451 degrees Fahrenheit." The writer liked the phrase so much that he used it as the title of his novel, although in reality paper does not ignite at that temperature.
