47 Meters Down
Short description
Lisa and Kate are sisters vacationing in Mexico, where Kate talks the more cautious Lisa into joining a shark-watching expedition. The two descend in a protective cage to see great white sharks up close, but the cable linking the cage to the boat gives way, sending them to the ocean floor roughly 47 meters below the surface. With their air supply dwindling to under an hour and the sharks still circling, the sisters must find a way back to the surface before time runs out.
Johannes Roberts directed the film and wrote the screenplay with Ernest Riera. It arrived in the middle of Roberts's filmography, after The Other Side of the Door and before The Strangers: Prey at Night, and it was followed by a companion film, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, two years later. Mandy Moore and Claire Holt play Lisa and Kate, with Matthew Modine, Chris Johnson, Yani Gellman and Santiago Segura in supporting roles. James Harris and Mark Lane produced.
Made for about 6 million dollars, the film took in roughly 62 million dollars worldwide, a substantial return on its budget. Audiences are mixed on it: it holds a rating of 5.6 out of 10 on IMDb from around 65,000 votes and 5.8 out of 10 on TMDB from nearly 3,000 votes, while the film critics' rating stands at 5.4 out of 10 from 157 reviews, leaving critics and audiences broadly aligned.
What's left behind the scenes
- Finely chopped broccoli was added to the pool water to make it appear cloudy and teeming with microorganisms at the bottom. According to Mandy Moore, it became unpleasant after a while – “it felt like filming in soup.”
- James Van Der Beek played the role of Lisa's friend, Stuart. He even filmed some scenes with Mandy Moore, but all of these scenes were cut during editing, so Stuart is only mentioned in the film.
- Most of the underwater filming took place at The Underwater Studio in Basildon, UK.
