Vikram Vedha is a crime thriller about a police officer, Vikram, who has spent years pursuing a gangster named Vedha. When Vedha unexpectedly turns himself in, he does not simply confess. Instead, he tells Vikram a series of stories about his own life, each one posing a question the officer must work through if he wants to understand the man he has been hunting. As the accounts unfold, Vikram's certainty about who is guilty and who is innocent begins to shift, and the boundary between the law and justice becomes harder to locate.
The film was written and directed by the husband-and-wife pair Pushkar and Gayathri, who also wrote the screenplay, with S. Sashikanth producing under Y NOT Studios. R. Madhavan plays Vikram and Vijay Sethupathi plays Vedha, with Shraddha Srinath, Kathir, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar and Prem in supporting roles. Pushkar and Gayathri later directed a Hindi-language film of the same name in 2022, which is their only other feature as directors and followed this one.
Released in July 2017, the Tamil-language film runs 147 minutes and mixes action and adventure with its crime story. On IMDb it holds 8.2/10 from around 55,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.2/10 from roughly 241 votes, a wide gap that reflects a much larger and more enthusiastic audience presence on the former.
