Mary Magdalene follows a young woman in the first century who rejects the marriage her family has arranged and joins a new movement led by Jesus of Nazareth. Finding purpose among his followers, she travels with them on a journey that leads toward Jerusalem. The film is a biblical drama directed by Garth Davis, his second feature after Lion, from a screenplay by Philippa Goslett and Helen Edmundson. Rooney Mara plays Mary, with Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Peter, Tahar Rahim as Judas, Ariane Labed as Rachel and Ryan Corr as Joseph.
Released in March 2018, the production brought together companies and backing from Australia, the United Kingdom, Italy and the United States, with a budget of about 20 million dollars. It earned roughly 12 million dollars worldwide, a return well below its cost. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from around 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3 from some 583 votes. A critics' rating of 5.5 from 112 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
Garth Davis went on to direct Foe in 2023, after this film, which remains his second of three features to date.
