That Evening Sun centres on Abner Meecham, an elderly Tennessee farmer who leaves the nursing home where his son Paul has placed him and makes his way back to the family farm, intending to live out his remaining years there. He finds that Paul has rented the property to Lonzo Choat, a man with whom Abner has old grievances, and that the new tenant has no intention of giving it up. Abner moves into a sharecropper's cabin on the land and refuses to leave until Lonzo goes, setting the two men against each other while the households around them are drawn into the standoff.
The film is a drama directed by Scott Teems, who also wrote the screenplay; it was his first feature, followed years later by The Quarry. Ray McKinnon and Walton Goggins, who appear as Lonzo Choat and Paul Meecham respectively, were among its producers. Hal Holbrook leads the cast as Abner, with Mia Wasikowska, Carrie Preston and Barry Corbin in supporting roles.
Released in November 2009, the film runs 109 minutes and was produced in the United States by Dogwood Entertainment and Ginny Mule Pictures. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from roughly 3,100 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 57 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 37 reviews places it in line with those audience scores.
