Lady Macbeth

Set in rural England in 1865, Lady Macbeth centres on Katherine, a young woman trapped in a loveless marriage to a man roughly twice her age. Her husband, Alexander, shows no interest in her, while his father, Boris, pressures her constantly and treats her with contempt. When Alexander travels away, Katherine escapes the confines of the household and begins exploring the surrounding countryside, where she meets Sebastian, a worker on the estate. Their affair awakens something in her, and her determination to pursue what she wants grows into something far more dangerous.

William Oldroyd directs from a screenplay by Alice Birch, with Fodhla Cronin O'Reilly producing. The film was Oldroyd's first feature, followed years later by Eileen. Florence Pugh leads as Katherine, with Cosmo Jarvis as Sebastian, Paul Hilton as Alexander, Naomi Ackie as Anna, Christopher Fairbank as Boris and Golda Rosheuvel as Agnes. The production involved 22 credited cast members and 41 credited crew, and it was made in the United Kingdom with backing from BBC Film, the BFI, Creative England and iFeatures. It runs 86 minutes.

The film took around 5 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from roughly 30,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.6 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 out of 10 from 198 reviews places it somewhat above both audience scores.
