The Little Hours

Set in the Garfagnana region of Italy in 1347, The Little Hours follows Masseto, a young servant who runs away from a vengeful master and takes shelter in a convent. There he is passed off as a deaf-mute laborer, a ruse intended to keep him hidden among the nuns. Three young sisters, Alessandra, Ginevra and Fernanda, are each struggling in their own way with the question of what their lives are meant to be, and the arrival of a handsome stranger unsettles the routine of the community. Father Tommasso and Sister Marea are among those responsible for the convent.

Jeff Baena wrote and directed the film, his third feature after Life After Beth and Joshy, and it was produced by Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Destro. Alison Brie, Kate Micucci and Plaza play the three nuns, with Dave Franco as Masseto, John C. Reilly as Father Tommasso and Molly Shannon as Sister Marea. The production, a Canadian-American comedy, brought together 41 credited cast members and 55 credited crew.

Released in June 2017, the film had a limited commercial footprint, taking in about 2 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.8/10 from roughly 29,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.9/10 from around 674 votes. A critics' rating of 6.5/10 from 126 reviews places it somewhat above those audience scores. Baena went on to direct Horse Girl and Spin Me Round.
