Short description

Phillip Filmore is a naive fifteen-year-old preoccupied with sex, and when his father leaves town on a summer business trip, he stays behind in the care of a French housekeeper named Nicole Mallow. Phillip develops a crush on her, and she is drawn into a scheme by the family's unscrupulous chauffeur, Lester Lewis. Lester uses the boy's infatuation to involve Nicole in a plan aimed at Phillip's trust fund, and the arrangement goes further than the teenager understands.

Private Lessons was released in 1981 and runs 87 minutes. It is a comedy with romantic elements, produced in the United States by Jensen Farley Pictures and Barry & Enright Productions. Alan Myerson directed it from a screenplay by Dan Greenburg, with R. Ben Efraim producing. The cast includes Sylvia Kristel as Nicole Mallow, Howard Hesseman as Lester, Eric Brown as Phillip, Patrick Piccininni as Sherman, Ed Begley Jr. as Jack Travis and Pamela Jean Bryant as Joyce. It was the first of two films Myerson directed, chronologically, ahead of Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach in 1988.

Made for a budget of about 3 million dollars, the film took roughly 26 million dollars worldwide, a substantial return on its cost. Audience scores are modest: on IMDb it holds 5.1 out of 10 from about 4,800 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 out of 10 from around 133 votes. A film critics' rating of 3.3 out of 10 from seven reviews sits well below the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In many countries, the film was initially either completely banned or released in censored versions.
  • The original trailer and other promotional clips were voiced by well-known television host Jay Stewart, who at the time worked for Barry-Enright Productions, the company that produced the film.
  • In one of the opening scenes, after Phil observes Sylvia with binoculars, he flips through a fashion magazine featuring a partially nude model. This is Gia Carangi, a famous photographer and model of the 70s and 80s, whose story was the basis for the film 'Gia' (1998).
