Skipped Parts

Skipped Parts is a coming-of-age comedy-drama set in 1963. Sam Callahan, a fourteen-year-old with literary ambitions, has reached the age when he starts thinking about girls. Convinced that a writer needs real experience rather than imagination, he sets out to learn about sex, turning first to his mother and then to a classmate, Maurey. His mother, Lydia, is a young single woman whose unrestrained behaviour has drawn the disapproval of her powerful father; the two of them are sent away from their South Carolina hometown and end up in a small town in Wyoming. There Sam struggles to fit in at school while Lydia finds support from a Blackfoot man named Hank.

The film was directed by Tamra Davis, its sixth feature following CB4, Billy Madison, Best Men, Half Baked and Half Baked's predecessor in her filmography, and it comes before Crossroads in her directing career. Tim Sandlin wrote the screenplay, and the cast includes Bug Hall, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mischa Barton, Peggy Lipton, Angela Featherstone and R. Lee Ermey. It is a modest American independent production rather than a studio release, with 21 credited cast members and 88 credited crew. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.2 from roughly 3,900 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.1 from a much smaller pool of 77 votes, a small and consistent reception from audiences.
