Charlie Countryman
Short description
Charlie Countryman is an American who travels to Bucharest after the death of his mother, following a vision in which she urged him to open his heart. On the flight he witnesses the death of a stranger with whom he shares a strange and unexpected connection. The man's final wish takes Charlie to his daughter Gabi, a Romanian cellist with whom Charlie falls in love almost immediately. Gabi is entangled with Nigel, a violent and unstable crime boss who refuses to let her go. Charlie, who is out of his depth, keeps trying to protect her and to keep her away from the dangers closing in around them.
The film stars Shia LaBeouf as Charlie, Evan Rachel Wood as Gabi, and Mads Mikkelsen as Nigel, with Til Schweiger, Rupert Grint and James Buckley in supporting roles. It was directed by Fredrik Bond and written by Matt Drake, produced by Albert Berger, Ron Yerxa and William Horberg.
Charlie Countryman runs 108 minutes and mixes action, comedy, drama, romance and thriller. It received a critics' rating of 4 out of 10 across 63 reviews, while audiences were more receptive, with a rating of 6.3 on IMDb from around 31,000 votes and 6.4 on TMDB from 667 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- At an early stage of the film's creation, Shia LaBeouf left the project, and during this period his role was offered to Zac Efron, but LaBeouf eventually returned.
- During filming, Shia LaBeouf actually took LSD to make the corresponding scene in the film look more natural.
- When Charlie Countryman (Shia LaBeouf) is driving from the airport, the taxi driver jokingly calls him Robert Redford. Much later, in an episode in pre-dawn Bucharest, after trouble in a nightclub, Rupert Grint’s character asks Charlie if he got into a situation similar to the events of the film "Three Days of the Condor" (1975). The fact is that Robert Redford played the main role in that film. Moreover, before "Dangerous Illusions", Shia LaBeouf starred in the thriller "The Company You Keep" (2012), where Robert Redford was both the director and the lead actor.
- In one of the dialogues, Darko mentions James Bond films to Charlie. Mads Mikkelsen played the villain in "Casino Royale" (2006).
