Evil Under the Sun

Evil Under the Sun follows detective Hercule Poirot as he becomes involved with a valuable jewel that has been replaced by a fake. His inquiries take him to an island resort, where a well-known actress is staying among a group of guests whose lives are tangled up with hers. Each of them seems to have a reason to wish her harm, and when she is found dead, Poirot must work out which of them is responsible. The story is based on Agatha Christie's novel and is set around an upscale holiday hotel.

The film was directed by Guy Hamilton, the twelfth of the thirteen features he directed in chronological order; it followed The Mirror Crack'd and was succeeded by Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins. Peter Ustinov plays Poirot, heading a credited cast of twenty-one that includes James Mason, Sylvia Miles, Roddy McDowall, Maggie Smith and Jane Birkin. Anthony Shaffer and Barry Sandler wrote the screenplay, and John Brabourne and Richard Goodwin produced.

Released in March 1982, the film runs 117 minutes and was made for about 10 million dollars, a figure it did not recover at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from roughly 24,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 from around 540 votes. A critics' rating of 7.2 from 13 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores on both sites.
