A French woman travels back to a colonial outpost in Northern Cameroon, triggering memories of her childhood. As the daughter of a colonial administrator, she spent much of her youth in the company of the family's house servant, Protée. While the young girl initially views the social hierarchy and the submission of the local population as natural, she gradually becomes aware of the systemic cruelty and inequality surrounding her.
This 1988 drama marks the first of 15 films directed by Claire Denis, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jean-Pol Fargeau. The movie stars Isaach De Bankolé, Giulia Boschi, and François Cluzet.
