Jess is a successful artist who gave up her daughter Chloe years earlier and now wants to bring the girl back into her life. Chloe, seventeen and troubled, has been living apart from her mother, and the two struggle to communicate. After Chloe and a friend knock twice on the door of an abandoned house tied to a local legend about a witch, the friend disappears and Chloe begins to experience disturbing visions she cannot explain. Jess takes her in, hoping to help, but soon finds the same presence intruding on her own life. To protect her daughter, she has to work out what the legend really conceals, unsure who around her can be trusted.
Caradog W. James directed the film, his second feature after The Machine in 2013, from a screenplay by Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler. Katee Sackhoff plays Jess and Lucy Boynton plays Chloe, with Nick Moran, Pooneh Hajimohammadi, Jordan Bolger and Javier Botet in supporting roles. The British production was made by Red & Black Films and Seymour Films.
Released in January 2017, the film had a modest commercial footprint, taking about 2 million dollars worldwide. Audiences are divided on it: on IMDb it holds 5.1/10 from roughly 16,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.5/10 from around 800 votes. A critics' rating of 4.9/10 from 25 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores, suggesting a horror film that drew a limited but not indifferent response.
