Aladdin
Short description
Aladdin is a street thief living in the city of Agrabah who dreams of leaving his life of petty crime behind. After meeting Princess Jasmine, who has slipped out of the palace in disguise, he falls for her and becomes determined to win her heart. His path crosses with Jafar, the Sultan's scheming advisor, who needs Aladdin to retrieve a magic lamp from a desert cave. The lamp holds a powerful Genie who can grant its owner three wishes, and Jafar wants it to seize control of the kingdom. When Aladdin obtains the lamp himself, he uses his wishes to pose as a prince and court Jasmine, while Jafar plots to take the lamp back.
The film is a live-action reworking of Disney's 1992 animated feature of the same name, directed by Guy Ritchie, who wrote the screenplay with John August. It is the eleventh of the nineteen films he has directed in chronological order, released between The Gentlemen and Wrath of Man. Mena Massoud plays Aladdin, Naomi Scott plays Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari plays Jafar, and Will Smith appears as the Genie. The cast also includes Navid Negahban as the Sultan and Nasim Pedrad as Dalia, with 43 credited cast members and 136 credited crew.
Produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Rideback on a budget of 183 million US dollars, the film took about 1.05 billion US dollars worldwide. Critics rated it 5.9 out of 10 across 387 reviews, while audiences were more favorable, giving it 6.9 out of 10 on IMDb from 313,000 votes and 7.1 out of 10 on TMDB from 10,815 votes.

- Filming in the UK began on September 6, 2017, and ended on January 24, 2018. Some scenes were filmed in Jordan. Reshoots took place in August 2018. In January 2018, it became known that makeup was applied to white extras during filming to prevent them from standing out in the crowd, which caused a scandal. Producers were accused of hiring too few actors of Middle Eastern and North African origin.

- The sorcerer Jafar transforms Iago into a giant bird to steal the magic lamp from Jasmine and Aladdin. This is a reference to the Roc, a huge eagle from medieval Arabian mythology. The Roc also appears in the tale of Sinbad the Sailor and in “One Thousand and One Nights”.
