Sister Gertrude works as a nun and head nurse at a religious hospital, where she is respected for her strict but caring authority over the staff. She has not recovered from a recent brain operation, and the aftereffects leave her with severe headaches, blackouts and hallucinations. To cope, she turns to morphine, and her behaviour grows increasingly erratic, placing both patients and colleagues at risk. As deaths begin to occur at the hospital, those around her sense that something is seriously wrong.
The film was directed by Giulio Berruti, who wrote the screenplay with Alberto Tarallo, and was produced by Enzo Gallo for the Italian company CineSud. Anita Ekberg plays Sister Gertrude, with Joe Dallesandro as Dr. Patrick Roland, Alida Valli as the Mother Superior, Massimo Serato as Dr. Poirret, Daniele Dublino as the Director and Paola Morra as Sister Mathieu. It runs 89 minutes and blends drama, horror, mystery and thriller elements within an Italian production.
Released in 1979, the film has found a modest audience over the decades. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.1 from around 2,600 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 4.8 from roughly 85 votes. The two scores are close, suggesting a similar reception among the viewers who have recorded their opinions on each platform.
