The Big Fix

Moses Wine is a private detective in California who once spent his college years as a student radical. Money is tight, and he is behind on support payments to his ex-wife, so he takes little interest in the race for governor until Lila, a friend from his university days, comes to him with an offer. She works for one of the campaigns and wants him to look into a dirty political operation aimed at damaging her candidate. Moses accepts the job, drawn both by the fee and by the chance to spend time with her, and begins tracing who is behind the smear. The inquiry becomes far more serious than he expected.

Richard Dreyfuss stars as Moses Wine and also produced the film, which was written by Roger L. Simon and directed by Jeremy Kagan. Kagan's first feature in this period, it precedes The Chosen, The Sting II, The Journey of Natty Gann, Roswell and Shot in his filmography. Susan Anspach plays Lila, with Bonnie Bedelia, John Lithgow, Ofelia Medina and Nicolas Coster among the credited cast of 55. The film mixes comedy, mystery and thriller elements across its 108-minute running time.

Made by Universal Pictures for about four million dollars, the film took in roughly thirteen million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from about 2,600 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 5.9 from a much smaller group of 41 votes.
